Erica Burkland, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology)

ACCESS – South Bay

A native New Yorker, Dr. Erica Burkland earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology (with a minor in music) from Vassar College. Her lifelong love of animals and interest in the field of animal-assisted therapy initially led her to pursue a Master of Social Work degree at the University of Pennsylvania. However, she soon realized that a career in veterinary medicine would be an even more impactful avenue for cultivating and honoring the human-animal bond.

Dr. Burkland earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University and was awarded the Neuroanatomy & Clinical Neurology Prize at graduation. She then completed a rotating internship at The Animal Medical Center in New York City, followed by a neurology internship at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital of San Diego, and a residency in Neurology and Neurosurgery at Mississippi State University. Dr. Burkland became ACVIM board-certified in Neurology in 2019 and has been practicing in Southern California since then. Although she enjoys all aspects of neurology, her primary interest lies in neurosurgery, and she is proficient in a wide variety of spinal and intracranial surgical procedures. Dr. Burkland earned her ACVIM Neurosurgery Certificate of Training in 2022.

While away from work, Dr. Burkland enjoys paddle boarding, hiking, baking, exploring local breweries (especially when her dogs can come along), and traveling. Well known among friends for her passion for long-nosed dogs, she has 2 Windsprites named Henle and Calyx and a miniature dachshund named Jolene.
