Erica Burkland, DVM, DACVIM (Neurology)
ACCESS – South Bay
A native of suburban New York City, Dr. Erica Burkland earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology (with a minor in music) at Vassar College. Her lifelong love of animals and interest in the field of animal-assisted therapy initially led her to pursue a Master of Social Work degree at the University of Pennsylvania. However, she soon realized that a career in veterinary medicine would be an even more impactful avenue for cultivating and honoring the human-animal bond.
Dr. Burkland earned her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from Cornell University and was awarded the Neuroanatomy & Clinical Neurology Prize at graduation. She then completed a one-year rotating internship at the world-renowned Animal Medical Center in New York City – it was here where she first joined forces with ACCESS colleague Dr. Robert Powers-Davis, both in the hospital caring for neurological patients as well as out of the hospital singing karaoke together on Wednesday nights. Dr. Burkland then completed a neurology internship at the Veterinary Specialty Hospital of San Diego followed by a residency in Neurology and Neurosurgery at Mississippi State University.
Dr. Burkland became ACVIM board-certified in Neurology in 2019 and has been practicing in Southern California since then. Although she enjoys all aspects of neurology, her primary interest lies in neurosurgery, and she is proficient in a wide variety of spinal and intracranial surgical procedures.
While away from work, Dr. Burkland enjoys paddle boarding, going to the beach, baking, exploring local breweries, and traveling. Well known among friends for her passion for long-nosed dogs, she has 2 Windsprites named Henle and Calyx, a miniature dachshund named Jolene, and 2 cats named Matilda and Katinka.
